Listen to the Seeds is an experience, their sound is raw, duplicating, sharp guitar playing and a hypnotic minimalist body, ingredients a few years later to resume the punk rock the reigning musical bloating. The combo was led by a shady character, charismatic and very particular voice, it was Sky Saxon, born Richard Marsh in Salt Lake City, Utah, in August 1937 (although some sources cite 1946 as her birth .) After recording a few singles on labels obscure moves to Los Angeles to Jan Savage, a guitarist with whom he shared the stage Saxon. They know the keyboardist Daryl Hooper (The Seeds was one of the first bands to use a keyboard, bass, and Ray Manzarek, keyboardist of The Doors) and drummer Rick Andrige, and well, the mess, are born Seeds.
In the summer of 1965 the GNP Crescendo label (The Other Half, The Lyrics) the form given its growing reputation built on powerful concerts given at the club in July Bido Lidos and record and publish their first single: "Can not Seem to Make You Mine" / "Daisy Mae". But his most great success would be given soon after with "Pushin 'Too Hard", a powerful and effective theme in late 1966 reached number 37 on the U.S. charts and became the benchmark for much of the future compositions of the band . After their first two albums (The Seeds and A web of sound, both of 1966) joins the group tornado sweeping psychedelic California in the summer of love and released their third album, Future, where the sitar, the tubas and flutes make appearance, an adventure fueled by his manager Tim Hudson was trying to emulate, it is said, the success of the Beatles with "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band ".
Curubeto According to Diego, the newspaper Scope, Saxon" mimicked the eccentric costumes and haircuts British mod culture, some critics believe that were it not for its aesthetics too bold even for that era of excess, the group might have been fully accepted by the mass audience ... With plenty of drug references in songs like "Tripmaker" and "Mr. Farmer", the Seeds were also revolutionary in music , very rare use of sound effects and songs of long duration, such as protopunk "Up in her room" of his second album "Web of Sound", that some species ensure forward The Velvet Underground or Iggy Pop .. These factors caused the Rolling Stones called them to open their shows on numerous occasions. They also had their moment in the film as the director Richard Rush called to participate in his film about the hippie phenomenon "Psych Out" (1968), starring Bruce Dern and Jack Nicholson, with the band appearing in both Saxon images and the soundtrack (with the years his songs would be part of countless soundtracks for Hollywood productions). "
But shortly after the group begins an inexorable decline that neither raw and alive or A full spoon of seedy blues a strange experiment with the Chicago blues recorded under the name Sky Saxon Blues Band , achieved avoided.
In 1969 the group split in 1971 Hopper Saxon and sign a contract with MGM. The success of the Nuggets compilation, released in 1972, re-awaken the interest of all the old tapes. In 1977 the producer Neil Norman compiled all the rare B-sides and unreleased material on the disc Fallin 'Off the Edge . After the breakup of the band Savage did Saxon police officer and continued to play solo, sometimes accompanied by The New Seeds , or a mystical incarnation, Sky Sunlight, performing a series of musical projects under various names like Sky Sunlight Saxon , The Starry Seeds Band, Sky Saxon & Firewall, King Arthur's Court and Shapes Have Fangs . In 1973, he joined a religious sect led by one YaHoWha, who baptized him as Sunlight and Arlick . In 1998 was responsible for organizing and editing a collection of thirteen tribal music CDs recorded in the seventies by the band of his religious community, the Ya Ho Wa 13.
During the eighties and part of the nineties also recorded albums and shows offered hippies joined by veteran musicians from bands like Steppenwolf and Iron Butterfly, as well as musicians from the new generation of bands like The Dream Syndicate.
to 71 years Saxon was still active professionally, and Saturday 20 June had given a show with a local band at a bar in Austin. Finished his performance, he felt an imbalance for which must be admitted the following Monday, and his condition was getting worse until his death. Sky Saxon died on June 25, 2009, the same day as Michael Jackson, of a heart attack. His death came when he was planning a major tour of the U.S. and Canada, called "California '66 tour where they were going to interpret refurbished versions of tracks from the Seeds, The Electric Prunes and Love. Until his death, musicians and fans of sixties culture in general he was venerated as a true living legend, a true relic from another era.
Saxon, witch doctor, lysergic entity, lead singer of the Seeds ...
The legendary Sky Saxon spoke about his band The Seeds, struts and influential garage-rock proto-punk group, their spiritual troubles , his musical influences, vegetarianism and personal philosophy.
us begin with the origins, what ye state groups before forming The Seeds?
Mi primera banda la formé junto a Jan Davies pero nunca terminó de funcionar bien, era una banda de surf y blues llamada Sky Saxon and Jan Davies. Posteriormente llegaron los Vikings y todo fue mucho mejor. Nos convertimos en Saxon and The Seeds y más tarde Sky Saxon and The Seeds.
Tras formar estos primeras bandas, ¿que impresiones tenías en estos inicios sobre el negocio musical?
Realmente comencé con la sensación de que me iba a convertir en una estrella, pero para ello necesitaba mucho la ayuda de los Vikings.
Supongo que la Invasión Británica was an important reference in your first sound. I'll tell you the name of several groups and give me a short opinion about them:
The Beatles: One of the largest. The feel as if they were my own brothers.
The Rolling Stones: inspired me like the Pretty Things. They are one of the sets of rock'n 'roll most important of all time. It would be great if Mick and I grabásemos together a rock album. For the record I bought many of the Rolling Stones LPs but more than the Beatles.
The Kinks: they supported me a couple of times. I felt a great honor sharing the stage with them. They are a great group and I was delighted that England sent to the United States along with many other great European bands.
The Who: were a great rock band. The group had so much energy and a drummer Keith Moon was fabulous.
The Zombies: One of the first big bands of the moment that many people loved.
The Yardbirds: Another of my favorite bands.
In Crescendo Records and the famous single Pushin 'too hard "you get out of anonymity because of your mettle and garage-rock absorbent achieving a major hit. How did you feel to achieve success first commercial?
was excited and the song became a classic. "Pushin Too Hard" was a major topic of rock'n'roll but I was more interested in face b, "Out of the question."
The Lps "The Seeds" (1966) and "A web of sound" (1966) are authentic garage-psychedelic classic with superb songs like "Try to understand", "Girl I Want You," "Can not seem to make you mine "," Tripmaker "," Excuse, Excuse, "" Rollin 'Machine "or" no escape ", your distinctive voice, rhythm incisors, rugged and minimalistic sounds and guitars nerve. Who were your influences maximum time to record these LPs?
At the time of these recordings did not have in mind to anyone in particular.
But do not think Mick Jagger as your big vocal influence?
Yes, Mick was one of my influences at first but I always felt I needed to go one step further with each album he recorded and I think they always have done. I have recorded many albums that most people have not heard about how to reach God. My records on the search for God will be appreciated later, when returning to Heaven means more than being a prisoner on the planet. That is the reason why I have been faithful to this idea and I made the best album with the Seeds of thirty-year career. It's an album by which people will understand this life and dance and sing happily. Designed to lift the spirits of the people. The name of the album is "Red Planet, The Visitors - Sky Saxon and The Seeds" (2004), also known as Sky Sunlight Saxon and The Seeds.
60 Return to What age groups and those who kept them girasteis best memory? How do you remember the musical atmosphere of the time compared to today?
When we speak of the 60 long I mean from the mid-60's, the era in which everything really happened. Jim Morrison and the Doors, Arthur Lee and Love, The Four Seasons and hundreds of major groups have opened for me during that decade. The "Flower Power" was the will of God and was too large to cover all this in a nutshell. I think that still remains alive.
In "Future" (1967) were willing to broaden your music sounds flower power and psychedelic. The LP received less sales than predecessors. What do you think of this album?
The album was never well finished. Wanted to add an orchestra style Sgt Peppers but my record label did not have many resources to share my musical vision at the time. We still need another week before they come out mixes for sale.

After bluesy "A Full Spoon Of Seedy Blues" (1968) and the live "Raw And Alive In Concert at Merlin's Music Box" (1969), the group decided to disband. I guess working with Muddy Waters, who wrote some notes on the disc was a pride for you. Who are your favorite bluesman?
'm a big fan of blues and black music but But now, like me, they never got too. We would have to accommodate a hotel or a place of refuge for all those people. I always liked Muddy Waters, Howlin 'Wolf, Lightnin' Hopkins and Otis Redding.
with different names (Sky Sunlight, SunStar, etc.) recorded several albums in the 70's. How would you define your sound post-Seeds?
More cosmic rock'n'roll. To better understand this sound, you have to consume a bit of acid. Taking acid is like the Bible.
We have a Sky Saxon LP with Redd Kross at The Cavern. How was that performance? Do you like Redd Kross?
Yes I loved the show and I quite like Redd Kross. They are, like most of my friends in my prayers. I pray for them.
You were precursors in the 70's punk. What do you think of punk and 70's music in general compared with that of the 60's?
All kinds of music I feel great. It's a matter of expressing your mind. This is best done on a disk in a corner of a street because that you are opening your mind to the masses. Is "Out of the question" no longer tolerate wars, they are "Pushin 'too hard" to all the peoples of the world.
In Hawaii emphasize your spiritual life. Can you tell me roughly what your personal philosophy?
My philosophy is vegetarianism and be friends with everyone because we are all equal in the eyes of God. I have always been friendly and tried to help mankind. I've been to Joshua Tree this past weekend. It is a sacred site located in the northern part of Palm Springs . There was a group called "Doggod" teaching the sacred name of God. His initials are "YHVH" and share time with my spiritual family. I renamed the "Sunlight" by my spiritual father, so I'm reborn in Yahowha.
Verdaderamente me encanta nuestro nuevo disco, "Red Planet, The Visitors." God bless us all, Sky Saxon and the Seeds.
So be it. Thank you very much, Sky, for your responses.
